Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust hosts doctors on training programmes with the Wessex and Severn Deaneries across a wide range of specialties. A GMC visit highlighted that all of the doctors in training interviewed said that they would recommend working here to a friend. DCH is a good place to train – its friendly atmosphere and dedicated supervisors help to support doctors. We are signed up to the Chief Registrar Programme and to the BMA Fatigue and Facilities Charter.
We have an active Junior Doctors’ Forum that is well attended by executive members of the Board. Our Guardian of Safe Working has been effective at implementing change on the basis of Exception Reporting. We have a well-equipped Doctors’ Mess and on-site accommodation.
The Education Team have years of experience in helping doctors gain the most from their training here at DCH. We have a rolling teaching programme but also an active Simulation Lab and visiting speakers. The topics covered combine clinical matters and professional subjects, eg fatigue; resilience. We value our Junior Doctor workforce and aim to ensure that their time here is enjoyable and productive.
“It is the friendliest hospital I have ever worked/been a student in. If you are unsure of something you will never be looked down on or feel bad for asking a question. You always feel part of a team.”
“No night shifts as an F1 – great work/life balance”
“Doesn’t feel like there is a hierarchical system, everyone appreciates your input and clinical judgement.”
“DCH is a welcoming hospital to start your career as a doctor. You have lots of exposure to procedures and quickly gain experience of practical skills. And it’s all in a beautiful location!”
“I have absolutely loved my foundation training here. I would 100% recommend DCH to any foundation applicants.”
